Strategies for exploiting authentic materials in the language classroom

Abstract

For many teachers, authentic materials have great appeal as sources of language input for the ESOL classroom. Because they are generally motivated by an author’s genuine desire to communicate ideas or emotions, they have the power to affect us at a deeper level than the contrived texts we see in textbooks, whose primary function is often to display lexico-grammatical features of English. However, exploiting authentic materials effectively in the classroom is no easy matter and requires both sound language awareness and a thorough appreciation of the principles underlying materials design. This presentation will suggest some strategies for selecting and exploiting authentic materials successfully in the language classroom, illustrated with examples from my own work.

Bio-data

Alex Gilmore has been teaching ESOL for the last 15 years in a wide variety of cultures: Spain, Mexico, England, Saudi Arabia and Japan. He has a M.A. in English Language Teaching and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (both from Nottingham University, England), a Cambridge University Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (DTEFLA), and is also a teacher trainer on the internationally recognized Cambridge CELTA course. He is currently teaching English for Academic Purposes at Kyoto University, Japan.
